Squirrel Wars

April 17, 2009

Damn varmints.

They have been eating all the little leaves sprouting from the ferns and flowers we planted.
So it is time to declare war.

I made some squirrel repellent from a hodge podge of online recipes and available ingredients.

Key ingredient: Habanero peppers.

  • 4 Habaneros
  • 10 Garlic Tines
  • 1/2 cup Vinegar (all I had was balsamic – this is for urbanite foodie squirrels)
  • 2 cups Water
  1. Blend in blender.
  2. Strain into spray bottle.
  3. Spray onto plants.
  4. Pray that it works.

I just transplanted a whole herd of bean and pea babies (see their one-week old pics in this post) last night, feeding them with a seaweed-based fertilizerĀ  and then spraying them generously with my habanero mix.

The hotness of the habanero (also of cayenne pepper) repels squirrels and other creatures…hopefully! I’ll be keeping a close eye on my tender sprouts to see if they survive.
