Weekend Stuff To Do: From Free to Fancy to Fancy-free

June 19, 2009

Picture 10The Council on the Environment of New York City is holding a Stop n Swap, which is just what it sounds like. You bring things you no longer need, and take things that others no longer need. Like a clothing  swap without the undressing ladies.

June 20, 2009, 11am – 3pm
3940 Broadway at 165th Street

The Sustainable Planet Film Festival costs a whopping $60. That’s six-zero. But maaaybe it’s worth it – the mayor of Curitiba, Brazil whose city has become a model of progressive environmental leadership came all this way!

There are so many interesting people and films at this festival; I hope there are enough people with chubby wallets and without that New York brand of ADD to be able to attend the festival.

June 20th, 12pm – 8pm
Bohemian National Hall, 321 East 73rd, bet. First and Second Aves.
Buy tickets here.

Hit up the Bohemian Hall Beer Garden in Astoria afterwards for a double dose of Bohemia.

Brand spanking new and open 24-7, the world’s first carbon counter billboard is open at Madison Square Garden.

Bike to the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island to be really fancy-free. Wanna know why? Here is the origin of the term fancy-free, thanks to every eighth-grader’s worst enemy, Shakespeare:

That very time I saw, but thou couldst not,
Flying between the cold moon and the earth,
Cupid all arm’d: a certain aim he took
At a fair vestal throned by the west,
And loosed his love-shaft smartly from his bow,
As it should pierce a hundred thousand hearts;
But I might see young Cupid’s fiery shaft
Quench’d in the chaste beams of the watery moon,
And the imperial votaress passed on,
In (mer)maiden meditation, fancy-free.
